Researchers throughout the world have always tried to find the cure for cancer, including those from the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada. In 2009, they started a large research to analyze the effects of different weeds on cancer cells. They’ve started the research after hearing about one oncologist who noticed something interesting in cancer patients who consumed a tea from one particular plant.
This plant is the common dandelion you can find almost everywhere!
Pamela Ovadje is the post-doctoral fellow at the University of Windsor who has done a thorough investigation on the anti-cancer effects of this plant.
She explains how they decided to start studying this plant. After received information from the oncologist whose patients noticed improvement after consuming dandelion root tea, they started looking for dandelions and trying to find what was in the tea that improved the condition of these cancer patients.
Ovadje admits she was a bit suspicious when they began studying dandelions mostly because you can find this plant everywhere, so if it does provide anti-cancer properties, someone would have already figured out about this.
The results from the studies about the effects of dandelion root extract on cancer are more than amazing.
The researchers successfully analyzed the effects of a simple water dandelion root extract in different types of human cancer cells in the lab. They observed the extract’s effectiveness against human chronic myelomonocytic leukemia, T-cell leukemia, and colon and pancreatic cancers, with no toxicity to non-cancer cells. What’s more, the results of the research were confirmed in a mice study where the animals were transplanted with human colon cancer cells.
Back in February 2015, this extract of dandelion root was approved for human trials. Currently, it’s in Phase I trials for end-stage lymphoma, leukemia, and other blood-related cancers.
The principal research investigator for the project and the professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Windsor, Dr. Siyaram Pandey, says dandelion root extract has good cancer-killing properties.
How Does It Work?
The multiple compounds in dandelion root extract make cancer cells undergo apoptosis, a programmed cell death. In other words, the combination of these compounds makes cancer cells commit suicide without harming the normal cells. Below you can see 2 cells undergoing apoptosis. The effect of dandelion root extract is so much better than chemo drugs which kill one normal cell for every 5-10 cancer cells.
However, we must say that this extract has concentration a lot higher than the one which is now available. Although the trials are still in progress, this dandelion root extract has a lot of potentials to be the future of cancer treatment.
The video below shows Dr. Siyaram Pandey discussing the power of dandelion root to kill cancer cells in 24 hours.
