Our bodies communicate with us, but we’re not always listening. Our bodies give us clues as to what is going on, but we don’t always understand. Skin health, inflammation, heartbeat, mood changes and the presence of mucous, are a just a few indicators. Mindfulness is one way we can be present in the moment and become aware of our bodies and emotions. But mindfulness alone is sometimes not enough to prevent health problems from manifesting.
To prevent health problems, we must sincerely understand what makes our organs work, how they are connected and energized. Our understanding of how nutrition works in our bodies allows us to respond to imbalances and engage the energy of the organ systems. External healing techniques such as massage therapy, chiropractic care, reiki or acupuncture, allow us to engage the energy of our body systems through metaphysical or direct contact means.
Jin Shin Jitsu
A little known, hands-on Japanese healing art technique can help improve physical and mental health through the fingers. This ancient technique can be used to jump-start healing from sickness and emotional issues, or to help prevent bigger health problems that are trying to set in. This ancient Japanese technique only takes five minutes or so, and requires mindfulness, focused energy, massage techniques and deep breathing exercises.
The Jin Shin Jitsu system suggests that every finger is aligned to two organs of the body. This system is similar to reflexology in that manual touch is sufficient to activate connections between the energy points on the extremity to the corresponding organ. Through this system we also have the power to tap into our emotions.
This technique allows us to access organs and emotions through our hands. The observed benefits assist physical recovery and also emotional and mental health support.
The technique requires a person to mindfully squeeze and hold a specific finger gently for three to five minutes. During this time, the person should breathe deeply in and out and focus on the organs that are connected to that finger. Afterward, the person should massage the fingers on both hands. This technique is believed to help one gain access to specific organs in the body through their own hands.
Organs and emotions can be accessed through the individual fingers
The thumb is believed to access the stomach and spleenwort, and to affect emotions associated with anxiety and depression. A person with headaches, skin problems, stomach pain and anxiety can find relief through the thumb meridian.
The index finger is thought to activate the urinary tract, the bladder and the kidneys. It affects the emotions of fear, confusion and discontent. A person with back pain, digestion problems and tooth pain may find relief through manipulation of the index finger.
The middle finger is correlated with the liver and the yolky bitter element. Emotions engaged include rage, anger and a lack of determination. Engaging this finger may help with fatigue, circulatory issues and menstrual problems, as well as with stress-related headaches.
The ring finger is connected to the large intestine and lungs. It is believed to alleviate the emotions of fear, negativity and sadness. Problems such as asthma and skin conditions can be addressed through this meridian.
The pinkie finger is connected to the small intestine and heart, and addresses emotions of anxiety and low self-confidence. Throat pain, heart disease and bone problems can be addressed through this finger.
